Tutorial – Chocolate Fudge Lotion Bars With A Hint Of Shimmer

For sometime now I’ve been wanting to make some hard lotion bars and yesterday I finally found the opportunity to do so.

20130502-123934.jpg

Are you all familiar with the term lotion bars?

For those of you who are not, lotion bars are basically the same as body butters and lotions, only these come in a solid form. Lotion bars are basically solid at room temperature but melt at near skin temperature. When you finish in the bath/shower you simply rub the bar over your body allowing your skin to absorb its moisture.

By making my own lotion bars I know exactly what it is I’m applying to my skin, therefore avoiding anything that may irritate me! My skin is very sensitive, making me prone to outbreaks of eczema and other flare ups. However, this isn’t the only benefit to making your own lotion bars. Its also a much cheaper alternative to expensive shop brought brands. Though the ingredients used are rather expensive, the quantity of what you have purchased will last some time, allowing you to make a good number of homemade skin products, therefore making the ingredients great value for money.

So, not only did I want a lotion bar that combats dry skin, I also wanted something a little sweet smelling and girly. With this I decided to make a batch of ‘Chocolate Fudge Shimmer Lotion Bars’

For this simple lotion bar recipe you will need to first buy these ingredients

Yellow Bees Wax Pellets
Almond Oil (Carrier Oil)
Unrefined Coca Butter
Raw Shea Butter
Witch Hazel
Pure Vitamin E Oil
Chocolate Fudge (Fragrance)
Cosmetic Glitter (Silvery White)

Tools…

Double boiler
Silicone Moulds (hearts)
Metal Spoon
Grater
Bowls
Scales or measuring cups
Spoons for mixing

Warning: This recipe does contain nut extract so those allergic to nuts should avoid!

So, before I get started on the tutorial, let me explain a little, my reasons for choosing the above ingredients.

For the lotion bar to work a carrier oil must be used. I chose almond oil as its known to be a great natural oil for people who suffer with dry skin. Almond oil moisturises and keeps the skin at a normal PH level during the colder months avoiding cracked dry patches like I sometimes get on my hands as a result of my eczema.

Secondly almond oil provides its user with a natural way to fight them frightening signs of ageing with its use of antioxidants and anti-aging properties.

Unrefined Cocoa butter is the best option for this recipe as it still retains all of its natural goodness and is completely pure and untouched. Its brought in large hard blocks that can be melted down into a liquid. It has a long shelf life of anything from 2-5 years dependent on its stored environment. It has a great buttery texture as it begins to melt and a pleasant natural fragrance. Cocoa butter is a great stable fat that is naturally packed full of antioxidants. Its great used as a lotion as like that of almond oil it helps to prevent dry and itchy skin. What’s more its perfect for a lotion bar as its solid form melts easily when it comes into contact with the skin which is then easily absorbed leaving your skin smelling delicious and feeling silky smooth.

Shea butter is extracted from the nut of African Shea trees. Its packed full of natural fatty acids that are again great to use on the skin. Shea butter is again a great option as like cocoa butter it has a reasonably low melting point. saying that, Shea butter isn’t the easiest butter to work with as it can often become grainy if not heated and cooled in the right way.

The benefits of Shea butter for your skin is that it is both moisturising and rejuvenating. It acts as a great skin toner too, helping beat cellulite and uneven skin texture. Like the above ingredients it fab as an anti ageing treatment and helps to combat dry skin such as eczema. This butter is packed with vitamins and therapeutic properties to protect skin from elements such as the sun and the wind making it a great addition to lip balms.

Yellow BeesWax has a higher melting point range of 62 to 64 °C compared to that of cocoa and Shea butters that normally have a melting range of below 40 °C. The beeswax therefore keeps the product solid for longer. For those living in hotter climates than the UK, a higher ratio of beeswax can be used if desired. Lastly, pure yellow beeswax has a nicer texture and naturally sweeter aroma then that of refined white wax pellets.

Added extras are both the witch hazel and the vitamin E oil. Only a small amount of both is needed but both have great benefits to the skin making these lotion bars even more beneficial.

So Lets Get Started….

Measures

to get the measurements needed for my batch of 6 large heart shaped lotion bars I used the following…

Equal measures of your main ingredients, which for this bar are cocoa butter, almond oil and wax pellets…

Unrefined Cocoa Butter 4 oz
Almond Oil (Carrier Oil) 4 oz
Natural Yellow Beeswax Pellets 4 oz

Other ingredients…

Shear Butter (1.5 oz)

Witch Hazel 1 1/2 Table Spoons

Vitamin E Oil 2 drops

Chocolate Fudge Fragrance Oil 30 drops

Cosmetic Glitter (Shimmer) 2 Tiny Pinches

First, take the cocoa butter and weigh out 4 oz. Then grate it into a large bowl. Note… This is time consuming and hard work so if you have an electric grater then go for it! As to avoid waste cut the last small pieces that are too small to grate into tiny pieces with a knife. Once done leave it to one side.

20130502-121327.jpg

Next weigh out your wax pellets (4 oz) and then your Shea butter 1.5 oz.

20130502-121622.jpg

20130502-121523.jpg

Boil a pan of water and once its bubbling turn down the heat and place a smaller pan or glass jug (if you don’t have a double boiler like me) into the boiling pan of water.

Keep the heat low and add your wax pellets. Remember these have a higher melting point so should go on first.

20130502-121715.jpg

Once the wax is almost liquidated, add the grated cocoa butter, stir a little and within a few seconds it should have began melting. At this point you should now add the Shea butter to your mixture. Give this a stir and then leave on the low heat while you prepare your carrier oil.

20130502-121849.jpg

For this measure out 4 oz of almond oil adding 1 1/2 table spoons of witch hazel to the oil followed by two drops of vitamin E. Give this a good mix before pouring into the mixture.

20130502-122004.jpg

At this point something very strange will happen. The addition of the cold oils to the hot wax makes the oil suddenly turn white with almost a solid appearance. Don’t panic just stir to blend all the ingredients together till the whole mixture has become a liquid.

Now remove from the heat and allow to let for 30-60 seconds before adding 30 drops of Chocolate Fudge Fragrance mix well and don’t take to long to avoid solidification.

20130502-122114.jpg

Lastly sprinkle in a few pinches of cosmetic glitter, mix and pour into your silicone moulds.

20130502-122211.jpg

20130502-122338.jpg

Let sit in till the liquid has solidified enough for you to more them into the fridge where you will leave them be for a good few hours (2 should be enough but 3 is even better).

20130502-122441.jpg

Once these have set, they should pop out the silicone moulds with ease. Let them stand for 20 minutes and then decided how you want to store them. If keeping for yourself, store in an old tin or some air tight containers, placing them in a cool dark place away from sunlight and other heat sources in-till your ready to use them.

20130502-123809.jpg

20130502-123715.jpgabove image I’ve tried to capture the sparkle

If you want to dress these up for a gift you can simply wrap them in some greaseproof paper, pop them into gift bags, tie with twine and write the name of the gift on a cute matching gift tag. Another idea, which I like best, is to line a glass jar with a pretty cellophane bag, piling your lotion bars inside before securing the lid and again adding a gift tag or naming label.

20130502-124015.jpg

20130502-124053.jpg

These lotion bars really do smell gorgeously chocolatey. The shimmer is so pretty and subtle too.

My skin feels smooth and soft and the smell last for hours as would a perfume.

Am I proud of my homemade lotion bars? Hell yes!

Tutorial – Decopatch Friendship Heart Pendants

Over Easter I shared with you all some crafts inspired by Polystyrene eggs. While shopping in the town centre when enjoying a recent holiday to Butlins in Bognor Regis, I popped into the ‘Works’ Where I uncovered these cute little polystyrene hearts.

Having recently used polystyrene miniature eggs to create Egg pendants with the children, it gave me an idea for a crafty project for these hearts.

The idea… Heart Friendship Pendants!

20130423-194029.jpg

If you fancy a go at these yourself, they are relatively easy to make just a little fiddly if anything. Its the perfect craft to do with bigger kids. Alice who is 10 had lots of fun making hers.

Here’s what you’ll need to make two pendants like ours…

2 designs of decopatch paper (your choice of design and colours)

Decopatch Glue

Mod Podge Shimmer (gold)

Glue/Decopatch Brush

Tiger Wire/Craft Wire

fishing Wire

Tiny Gold Beads

Glass beads

Glass crystals (colours to complement Decopatch paper)

5 x 4mm flat backed crystals (colours to complement decopatch paper) I used white and blue.

Jewellery Findings (couple of crimping beads and crimp covers, 2x pendent attachment, jump hoops, 2x clasps & catches)

Tools…

Crimping tool
Brushes
Scissors
Nail (to pierce a hole through hearts)

Here’s how to put it all together to make your heart pendents

1) Use a sharp nail to pierce 2 small holes opposite one another, right at the top of your hearts in the centre, like so…

2) Cut papers into small manageable pieces. Decopatch your hearts using your paper pieces and decopatch glue. This is done by simply adding glue directly to the heart and over the top of the paper. Cover one side of pendants, allow to dry for 30-40 minutes before doing the other sides.

When it comes to covering the sections of the hearts where the two holes are located, do this using the nail to locate the holes and piercing the paper.

20130423-193135.jpg

3) Once these are dry use a clean brush to apply a thin layer of Mod Podge gold shimmer. Apply to one side of the hearts, leave it to dry for 30 minutes before adding the shimmer to the opposite sides and again leaving to dry.

4) while the pendants are still wet, secure your 3 4mm flat back crystals in a row down the centre of one side of one of your pendants and the remaining crystals onto your remaining heart pendant in the same way. Now leave to dry.

20130423-193227.jpg

5) Now take your two tiny gold beads and insert into the two holes with the holes facing up.

6) next take your pendant attachments and fit them to the hearts via the holes on the gold beads.

7) Next, take some fishing wire (enough to make desired necklace length) and thread it through each of your pendants hoops

20130423-193312.jpg

8) Now thread on your glass beads and crystals like so. Five on each side looks nice. Do the same for your second necklace in a different style.

9) Make a knot on both ends of the wire while you prepare your findings.

10) Finally connect your crimps and covers, jump loops and catches. Sit back and admire your work.

20130423-193438.jpg

We made 2 heart necklaces as Alice-Sara wanted to make these for herself and best friend as friendship necklaces.

20130423-193354.jpg

The thing I love most about this project is the endless possibilities it brings. You can make a different heart for each day of the week just by changing the paper style or beads and crystals on your necklace.

What’s more, with the magic of Decopatch glue and Mod Podge your polystyrene heart is now stronger and much more solid, but still super light to wear.

Why not try it yourself, experimenting with different papers and beads as you go.

Hope I’ve inspired you to get creative with Decopatch papers… Enjoy.

What’s In My Makeup Bag – My Top 5 Nail Polishes

I’ve done a few “Whats In My Makeup Bag” posts before but sadly not in a while! So, today I thought I’d share my favourite 5 nail polishes that I currently house in my makeup bag.

20130304-175446.jpg

So here we go… I’m counting down from number 5… Oh and check out the Vine clip at the end of this post.

Number 5…. Barry M 293 Grey

A very matt grey that looks great worn alone or with Leighton Denny pure white polish applied as nail art. The polish is pretty easy to apply. Its rather thick so its better to apply a couple of thin layers avoiding heavy coats. If a good top coat is applied the polish lasts well over a week before any chips appear and in my opinion this is much longer than some of the more expensive brands I’ve owned. Barry M is a high street brand that’s a true bargain for under a fiver.

20130304-175059.jpg

Number 4… O.P.I Nail Lacquer – Colour: “Just Spotted The Lizard” Collection: Spiderman Collection

This is a two tone polish that shines a gorgeous gold and green, though in some lights it sometimes has this amazing hint of teal/blue. I love how wide the brush is and how easy the polish is to apply. The only downfall for me is how quickly this polish chips compered to other O.P.I polish, this one started to chip in just a few short days.

But given I love the colour so much its still one of my current favourites.

20130304-180052.jpg

Number 3 Leighton Denny – Diamond Diva

This is a beautiful shimmering silver that looks amazing when it catches the light. The bottle makes the colour seem more like a glitter polish than a shimmer so I was actually really pleased to find it was the latter which I prefer. I apply two thin layers, the polish dries super fast and I’m then left with a non streaky finish that doesn’t lose its sparkle when a top coat in applied. I always find that if wearing a base and top coat the vanish is chip resistant for at least a week.

20130304-175226.jpg

Number 2 Leighton Denny – striptease

As you can see I’m a bit of a Leighton Denny Fan (my top drawer on my dresser is stacked full of it)! I love this colour which is perfect for both spring and summer. Its a really shimmery pink that seems to have lots of different tones coming through. These tones mainly consist of other pinks, as well as the odd hint of lilic and a little peach maybe even orange.

Again the polish is easy to apply (two thin coats work well for me). This one also lasts really well when worn with a good topcoat vanish. It was a strong contender for my number one spot!

20130304-175302.jpg

And finally the polish crowned my current favourite polish in my makeup bag for March 2013 goes to…

WINNER

Number 1: Nail Polish By H&M – Colour: Bella’s Choice

Yes, your not mistaken, the award did just go to the high street fashion chain H&M… Its the wonderful colour I blame for this! Ok, honestly, it doesn’t apply as well as my Leighton Denny and does probably start to look that little bit shabby a day or two ahead of my Leighton Denny Polish. However, I’m totally in love with this very pretty blue colour that is ideal for spring and summer. The polish looks as good on the nails as it does in the bottle. It reminds me of a tropical ocean, making it a perfect travel companion for them summer trips aboard!

20130304-175355.jpg

Verdict…. I love it!

And here’s the Vine Clip that demonstrates the colours much better.

Homemade Cath Kidston Inspired Christmas Baubles

My tree is extremely fun this year, I’ve let go and just gone with the flow! I’ve not tired myself down to a colour scheme or particular style as I usually would. seriously, this year its an explosion of colour and creativity with shop brought bright baubles, handmade wooden gingerbread hearts, shabby chic ornaments and dazzling home made snowflakes.

I must admit I’m feeling pretty proud to be out of my comfort zone. I love brights and this year I even brought neon baubles in funky pinks, blues greens and yellows. These mixed in with all our homemade crafts give the tree a very unique edge and I’ve got to admit I’m kinda loving it.

20121212-152809.jpg

Yes, my love of all things vintage and shabby chic would seem something of an odd mix with that of bright bold colours, but again the home made girly decorations of pastel yarn tied hearts and gingerbread men slot in rather nicely.

Some of my favourite decorations I’ve made this year are that of the Cath Kidston inspired shabby chic fabric covered glitter baubles in pretty pinks and creams. These fabric covered baubles have been glittered with shimmering golden Mod Podge with an added touch of ultra fine pink glitter dust making them beautifully unique.

20121212-153157.jpg

These are really extremely easy to create and a great way to upcycle them old baubles that have seen better holiday’s.

So here’s what you’ll need and some very quick simple instructions to get going and create your own baubles.

You will needs

Some old baubles (as many as desired)

Fabric scraps (Cath Kidston never fails to impress)

Selection of thick ribbon (long enough to tie around the middle conference of each bauble)

Selection of thin ribbon to hang baubles from your Christmas tree

Ultra fine glitter dust in pink (or whichever colour suits your fabric)

Mod Podge Shimmer (gold)

Decopatch Glossy Glue (optional as can just use the mod podge)

Tools

Glue brushes
Scissors
Embellishment sticky tabs

Your Baubles don’t have to be recycled as you can always pick up a bargain pack from your local PoundLand or equivalent. I also brought some great baubles for another craft project for 10p each in our local charity shop. Basically… If you have no baubles to Upcycle these can be picked up both easily and cheaply.

20121212-154441.jpg

Step 1 – once you have decided on your fabric, cut it into small pieces (size can vary depending on bauble size and desired style)

20121212-153510.jpg

Step 2 – Right, firstly add some mod podge to a mixing cup followed by a good few sprinkles of ultra fine glitter. mix well and cover till needed.

20121212-153647.jpg

20121212-154313.jpg

Step 3 – Now, given the mod podge is a gold shimmer with added glitter, you may feel its a waste to use it as the undercoat for glueing fabric. However if your using a bauble that has a very dark or prominent colour, then using the mod podge will help to prevent the colour gleaming through. I used just the shimmer mod podge for my pink bauble and both glossy Decopatch glue and shimmer mod podge for my cream bauble.

20121212-154801.jpg

Now start coating the bauble with your chosen glue. If working with both glues, use the Decopatch glossy glue for the undercoat and the mod podge for the outer coat (this requires patience as you will be required to continuously swap between brushes every few seconds). If using just mod podge then just paint it directly onto the bauble layering fabric and mod podge as you go.

20121212-155127.jpg

Note… The outer section should only have a thin layer of mod podge as this will be the baubles finish. If second coats are desired these can be applied only once your first coat is dry. This avoids bumps and drips forming. Also try to brush in pretty much the same directions to avoid noticeable odd looking brush marks.

20121212-155350.jpg

Step 4 – now attach a decoration hook or if you don’t have any some thread or ribbon (don’t worry you can change for prettier hanging ribbon later). You need to attach either one of the above now so that you are able to hang your baubles as to allow them to dry quickly and evenly. My mod podge only pink decoration was actually dry in an impressive 30 minutes where my cream bauble took considerably longer. I just left them both over night as they were decopatched in fabric just before I headed of to bed.

Step 5 – Once dry inspect baubles and if second coat of mod podge is required then again cover in a very thin layer and then allow to dry (do not add any more fabric just mod podge)!

Step 6 – Once all coats are applied and baubles are nice and dry, its time to add the finishing touches.

For each bauble take your chosen thick ribbon, cut down to size and wrap around the middle of your bauble (securing with a few glue dots or embellishment sticky tabs if needed). Now, tie into a centre bow. If desired, use a small piece of ribbon in the same colour to wrap around the centre of your bow. Secure in place with a glue dot or very small embellishment sticky tab. This will give the bow a really neat and tidy finish.

20121212-155705.jpg

20121212-155514.jpg

20121212-160216.jpg

Step 7 – now choose your thin hanging ribbon. for my pink bauble, I have gone for a striking thin pink ribbon to match my bow and a white glittery organza ribbon to hang my cream bauble. If you don’t fancy adding any more ribbon at all, yarn looks really effective! You could just use a decoration hook for a really easy and simple look.

20121212-155900.jpg

So, there you have it! Cath Kidston inspired fabric glitter baubles that are simple to create.

Shabby Chic decorations for my tree of randomness!

20121212-160848.jpg

Mod Podge Christmas decorations

This is a really simple idea for making decorations for your tree.

20121203-135315.jpg

You will need

Some glittery flower embellishments in bright colours (these are currently in PoundLand)

White foam glittery flowers (PoundLand)

Selection of ribbon

Glue dots

Gold simmer mod podge (Hobbycraft)

Tacky glue (Baker Ross Ltd)

Small glue brush

20121203-141644.jpg

This is so simple its scary. Just layer your bright flowers on top of one another, starting with the biggest first. Use glue dots to secure your embellishments in place.

20121203-135733.jpg

Once you have stuck down your second flower, take a white foam embellishment and stick on top of the second flower.

20121203-140037.jpg

Now take one of your smaller flower embellishments in the same colour as the first one you used and stick this to the white foam embellishment, only this time use the tacky glue.

20121203-140221.jpg

20121203-140402.jpg

Now turn the layered flower over to reveal its non glittery side.

20121203-140658.jpg

Selected your ribbon and cut down to size (this depends how you want them to hang, I prefer them short rather than long). Now loop the ribbon securing both ends to the centre of the flower with some glue dots.

20121203-140810.jpg

Select a flower embellishment that is the same size as your first, only ensure its a different colour. Add a glue dot to its non glittery side and lining it with your first large flower. Stick it in place therefore hiding where you have stuck down your ribbon.

20121203-140950.jpg

Now do the same as what you did for the other side. Don’t forget that following your second flower the third should be a white foam flower and the last should be the smallest embellishment that is the same colour as that of the first.

20121203-141134.jpg

20121203-141311.jpg

Now all that’s left to do is cover the decoration in Mod Podge.

20121203-141507.jpg

Once you have covered one entire side hang and let dry. Once dry (around 30 minutes) turn over and cover the other side in the same way.

Leave for a few hours to ensure the finished decorations have fully dried before hanging from the Christmas tree.

You can have loads of fun mixing up your colours. I know that myself and daughter enjoyed making these together.
